The only School of Management in Colombia with the Triple Accreditation recognition
My research focuses on the social and cultural history of Colombia and Great Britain, with a particular interest in the study of elites, business sectors, and the state during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. I seek to address broad questions about the development of modern societies in a period marked by profound social change: What practices enabled elites to maintain internal cohesion and group consciousness, distinguish themselves from other social classes or sectors, and reproduce their power and wealth over time? To what extent were they open or closed to new forms of wealth, status, racial and ethnic ties, or kinship networks?
My first book project, based on my doctoral dissertation at the University of Oxford, offers a new social and cultural history of the nineteenth-century British state through the lens of Civil Service reforms, with a particular focus on the Treasury Department between c.1848 and 1914—the financial core of the state and the epicenter of British capitalism linked to the City of London. Adopting a life-cycle perspective that considers generations, family, and social class, the book explores the conditions under which both the state and its aristocracy modernized and professionalized. I analyze how the patronage system was gradually challenged and replaced by new forms of public administration, appointments, promotions, and pension regimes. In doing so, I demonstrate that the modernization of the British state both reflected and shaped broader transformations in attitudes toward public service, family, and the role of social class in governance. The book thus contributes to a renewed understanding of Britain’s administrative, political, and social history, as well as its contemporary history.
I view academic practice as a collaborative endeavor and have participated in various collective research projects throughout my career. I am a member of the Research Network on the History of Parliaments in Latin America, based at the University of Oxford, and currently serve as author and editor of the volume Destined to Rule: The Making of Latin American Elites since Independence (Routledge, forthcoming 2026–27), which includes contributions from Alan Knight, Barbara Weinstein, Margaret Chowning, and other leading historians of Latin America.
My work on Colombian history has been published in academic journals across Europe and the Americas, including Anuario de Historia de América Latina, Historia Crítica, Latin American Research Review, and Journal of Latin American Studies.
