Professor García will contribute specifically to Working Group III: Climate Change Mitigation, focusing on Chapter 2, which analyzes past and current anthropogenic emissions and their drivers.
This appointment represents a significant contribution to sustainability and climate change research at Universidad de los Andes. As a Lead Author, Professor García will help shape scientific knowledge that informs climate policy design, international negotiations, and environmental litigation worldwide.
In addition to Professor García, Catalina González Arango, Professor at the University’s Faculty of Sciences, will also participate as a Lead Author in Working Group II: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability.
The IPCC Assessment Reports are among the most authoritative scientific references on climate change globally. Established in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the IPCC brings together experts worldwide to synthesize and evaluate the best available scientific evidence.
Professor García, a Civil Engineer and Environmental Economist, specializes in designing and evaluating initiatives and policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. His participation strengthens the visibility of research led by Universidad de los Andes and reinforces the University’s commitment to generating knowledge that addresses global sustainability challenges.
“Participating in this process is a unique opportunity to contribute to understanding and interpreting scientific evidence on climate change, informing strategies for global and local mitigation,”
said Professor García.
The Seventh Assessment Cycle will run until 2029 and will include contributions from three working groups, special reports, and a Synthesis Report that will serve as a key input for global decision-making on climate action.
