For Rector Raquel Bernal, it is essential to reflect on the factors shaping the present and future of higher education, including the needs of new generations, increased life expectancy, and automation of jobs. She stated:
“At Universidad de los Andes, we are exploring new paths and imagining the future of education through digital transformation, evaluating technological tools that can enhance teaching and learning for students and professors.”
Juan Pablo Soto, Vice Dean of Corporate Relations at the School of Management, explained:
“Our goal has always been to improve the learning process. For over 10 years, we have worked in virtual environments, and the pandemic accelerated this transition. That’s why we invested in this room, which significantly enhances online learning. Up to 100 students can connect simultaneously, each with a designated spot in the classroom, just like in a face-to-face setting. Professors can interact directly with every student without interference.”
Why is it unique?
Each screen includes a camera and speaker, and every student has a specific location in the virtual classroom. This setup fosters closeness between students and professors, allowing participants to see their peers and interact as if they were physically present. The room also features an electronic whiteboard, a conventional board, a touchscreen control panel, and an additional screen for guest speakers.
Sessions are supported by a production team that coordinates logistics such as camera angles, microphone activation, and lighting to ensure the highest quality experience.
The EVI project took approximately three years to conceptualize, design, and build. It will initially serve more than 5,000 students across the School’s programs. The initiative involved collaboration between the School of Management, the Information and Technology Services Directorate (DSIT), and the University’s Campus Management team, along with several technology providers.
For professors, EVI offers a virtual teaching experience that closely mirrors in-person classes, although it requires adaptation and training to maximize its potential. Soto added:
“One of our main motivations was the learning gap caused by the pandemic and the shift to fully digital platforms. When students returned to classrooms, we observed significant skill loss. This, combined with the need for flexible education, drove us to launch this room and offer a different virtual interaction that enhances the learning experience.”
This milestone reinforces Uniandes School of Management’s leadership in pedagogical innovation and its ability to deliver education at the highest international standards. The School remains the only institution in Colombia with the Triple Crown accreditation (AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA), placing it among the top 1% of business schools worldwide.
