What does writing a teaching case involve?
Developing a pedagogical case is a challenging and rewarding process that creates direct communication with two key audiences in business schools: professors and students. The case is written for students, while the instructor’s manual is designed for faculty using the case in class.
According to AACSB, recognizing cases as research outputs strengthens faculty thought leadership, enhances industry connections, better prepares students for the workplace, and supports accreditation processes.
Universidad de los Andes School of Management has been a pioneer in promoting case writing and usage, actively participating in the creation and leadership of two major Latin American case collections:
- Cladea-Balas Case Consortium (CBCC) , currently edited by María Helena Jaén, Honorary Professor at the School.
- Social Enterprise Knowledge Network (SEKN), coordinated by Professor Rosa Amelia González (IESA, Venezuela).
The School also contributes to editorial boards of these collections through Professor Roberto Gutiérrez.
Why is CRJ significant?
CRJ is one of the most recognized peer-reviewed journals for teaching cases, managed by the North American Case Research Association (NACRA). Publishing in CRJ elevates the academic recognition of cases to the level of scholarly articles, benefiting faculty evaluation systems such as Academia Uniandes and CvLAC.
The case, now available in the Harvard Business Publishing repository, analyzes the dilemmas faced by a family-owned company in Palmira, Colombia, after years of financial crisis exacerbated by COVID-19 and social unrest. Students are challenged to evaluate strategic options—debt restructuring, diversification, or external partnership—balancing financial and socio-emotional wealth considerations.
This milestone reinforces the School’s commitment to producing high-quality teaching materials that enrich learning experiences and strengthen its academic impact globally.
